BIBD Connects will be a cornerstone facility of Temburong’s Labu Square when it is completed by mid-2025.

Labu Square, a 17-hectare development, will be the first commercial and recreational site for visitors entering Temburong from the SHOAS Bridge, serving as a transit hub for visitors from the capital, Lawas, and Temburong.

The Labu BIBD Connects—a facility combining ATM services with retail and community space—will be the largest of the three Connects, spanning 3,135 square meters.

The multi-story building will feature energy-efficient designs, including solar power and rainwater harvesting, with more retail space and dining options than the other Connects at TMJE and Lambak Kanan. A central communal area will also host pop-up markets, gatherings, and workshops.

Minister of Home Affairs YB Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Ahmaddin Hj Abd Rahman (R) officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Labu BIBD Connects with BIBD MD and CEO Awg Junaidi Hj Masri (L) and Temburong’s representative to the Legislative Council YB Hj Sulaiman Hj Nasir (centre).

In a press release for their Labu groundbreaking held earlier this morning, BIBD emphasized its commitment to Temburong, being the only bank with a dedicated branch there.

“BIBD Connects Temburong will offer rentable spaces specifically designed for MSMEs. These spaces will provide local entrepreneurs with a platform to generate income and grow their businesses, contributing to the overall development of the Temburong district,” the bank said.

“By offering affordable and accessible spaces, BIBD aims to empower local enterprises to thrive in a competitive market.”

Labu Square’s development is overseen by the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), and will feature public amenities including a prayer room and public toilets.

A separate commercial area and park-style recreational zone are also planned in the initial phase. Surrounding area for future developments have also been earmarked for further expansion.

Labu Square is part of the government’s continued efforts to develop Temburong economically in line with its status as Brunei’s “green jewel” and premier eco-tourism destination. Following the opening of the SHOAS Bridge, the focus remains on projects that support environmental sustainability and align with the district’s unique ecological character.
