Big Bwn will be hosting Think Pink – an event to raise awareness of breast cancer – this Sunday (October 29) at the Knowledge Hub in Anggerek Desa.
Held in conjunction of the Breast Cancer Awareness month, the event, which runs from 3pm to 8pm, will see local breast surgeon from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital Dr Amalinda POKIP DSS Hj Suyoi, give a breast cancer talk, as well as a demonstration of breast self-examination by Nurulhuda Muhammad, a nurse from the Brunei Cancer Centre.
The event is free and open to the public.
“There is still a lack of awareness and exposure for breast cancer in the country as there are many women who still don’t know how and what to do,” said Noorhafizah Hj Rashid, founder of Big Bwn – a local company popular for hosting pop-up events and projects showcasing local youths’ talents and skills.
Over 800 women in Brunei Darussalam have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past decade, with an increasing number each year. In 2016 alone, 139 new cases of breast cancer patients were reported in Brunei.
Aside from talks, there will also be women entrepreneurs showcasing their products ranging from clothes, scarves, food, snacks and drinks in a pop-up style environment to encourage people to interact and share their stories in an informal environment. People are further encouraged to come dressed in pink for a chance to get free cookies.
“We aim for this to be an informal affair where women can be comfortable and learn more about breast cancer and how to detect it,” added Noorhafizah.
The event will also feature a Think Pink petition which members of the public are encouraged to sign as a pledge to remind and inform their loved ones about breast cancer checks.
